Politics

I’m a National Coalition Party member whose guiding ideas are, alongside economic responsibility, social and environmental responsibility. Words that also describe me are centre-right, liberal, and reform-minded. The foundation for everything is sound management of the economy and a society that encourages people.

A good society is built on things like education, equal opportunity, and sustainable development. Decisions are always made on the basis of values and grounded in facts. On this page you can read more about my values and goals.

Values

An encouraging society and a strong economy

A good society encourages people to work, to be enterprising, and to take responsibility – it creates opportunities to succeed. At the same time it must be able to secure the services of the welfare society for future generations too.

This requires responsible economic policy: curbing debt, structural reforms, and determined measures to strengthen sustainable growth. Small and medium-sized enterprises in particular must be given better conditions to grow and to employ – by easing unnecessary regulation and adding flexibility to make agreements.

Working life is changing at a furious pace. We must understand how, for example, the AI transformation will affect things and what it demands of decision-makers. Everyone must have a genuine opportunity to take part in the labour market according to their own abilities – and at the same time we must look after those who cannot.

Education and know-how

Education and know-how are the foundation of well-being and success. Finland’s strength has been its high level of competence, and on that we must build the future too.

The foundation is laid in the early years. That is why I want to strengthen early childhood education and the school system so that every child and young person has a genuine chance to learn, grow, and discover their own strengths. High-quality education should carry through life and encourage continuous learning in a changing world.

Success does not come without investment in knowledge and research. We need strong higher education, an ambitious science policy, and close cooperation between education and business, so that Finland can thrive in a knowledge-intensive world.

Education, however, is more than knowledge and skills. It is the ability to understand others, to take responsibility, and to look at the world with an open mind. An educated society shows in how we treat one another.

The environment and a sustainable future

Climate change is one of the greatest challenges of our time. I want a society that takes responsibility for nature and secures clean air, water, and food for future generations too.

Nature is not merely a resource to us, but a value in itself. That is why we must make choices that preserve the diversity of the environment and look after our especially precious marine environment and archipelago.

I believe sustainable solutions arise through know-how, technology, and the market economy. When people and businesses are given incentives to act responsibly, a great deal can be achieved. Environmental protection and economic growth do not have to be in conflict; at their best they reinforce one another.

Animal welfare also matters to me. A civilised society treats animals with dignity and ensures they are well cared for.

Equal opportunities

I want a society where everyone has a genuine chance to grow, develop, and pursue their own dreams. No one’s path should be determined by the kind of family they are born into.

The role of society is to make things possible. It should give everyone enough to try, to succeed, to fail, and to rise again. When people get to use their full potential, the whole of society is better off.

I hold gender equality to be important. In working life, in educational choices, and in well-being there are still gaps that must be deliberately narrowed. Equality does not just happen; it has to be advanced.

Every person’s right to self-determination and bodily integrity must be inviolable. Finland should be the best place in the world for all kinds of children and families.

Internationalism

I am a Finn, a Nordic citizen, a European, and a citizen of the world. Patriotism and internationalism go side by side, not as opposites. We belong to the Western community of values, where democracy, the rule of law, and individual freedoms are emphasised. These values must be defended in a changing world.

I have lived and worked in Brussels, which has strengthened my own European thinking and my understanding of international cooperation. I believe in an open Finland that trades, cooperates, and takes an active role in the world.

At the same time we need a responsible immigration policy and effective integration, so that everyone has the chance to find their place in society and take part in building it. Finland’s strength is stability and trust. They endure when everyone living here feels they belong to society and wants to help build it with their own contribution.

Janika Takatalo – Parliamentary election themes

Finland’s future does not come about on its own. It is born of the choices we make today and of the trust we build in tomorrow. I want to build this society – not tear it down. What matters most to me is a Finland where people can live safely, trust one another, and believe that tomorrow is better than today.

At the same time we must dare to look ahead. Finland only thrives if we look after our know-how, give room to work and enterprise, and build a sustainable relationship with the surrounding world and with nature. That is why I want to build a Finland that does not merely react to change but creates it – stable, cultured, and hopeful.

01

Children and young people

When children and young people are doing well and families are coping, the whole of Finland thrives. That is why decision-making must take the perspective of children and young people into account more strongly than before. Every child has the right to a safe environment to grow up in, to high-quality early childhood education and schooling, and to sufficient support at the right time. If we want more children, Finland must become far more child-oriented and family-friendly!

Young people’s well-being is one of the central questions of our era. Far too many experience loneliness, mental-health challenges, or are left without direction. I want a society that recognises these challenges early and offers support with a low threshold. Early intervention and prevention are the most sustainable solution, not only humanly but also for society.

Families’ everyday lives must be supported so that combining work and family life is smooth and no one is left alone under too heavy a burden. As many as possible of those who wish to have children must be helped to realise their hopes, for example by improving access to fertility treatments. When we invest in children and young people, we make the most important investment possible in the future.

02

Skills and education

Education and know-how are the foundation of Finland’s success. We must turn Finns’ level of competence upward again and ensure that education is of high quality at every level. We must also ensure that people from all kinds of backgrounds have a genuine chance to study as far as their own abilities take them. That means, for example, defending free education.

The foundation for competence is built in early childhood education and comprehensive school, but learning does not end there. We need an education system that encourages lifelong learning and gives people the chance to develop their skills throughout life. This is how we can respond to the needs of a changing working life and to new technological upheavals.

Cooperation between universities, research, and business is essential for new innovation and growth to emerge. Investments in education, science, and research are investments in Finland’s future and competitiveness.

03

Work and entrepreneurship

The welfare society is built on work. We need more jobs, and above all they are created by improving the conditions for entrepreneurship and growth. We also need popular capitalism, so that more and more Finns can get onto the path to prosperity.

Finland should be a country where work pays and where enterprise is smooth and attractive. That means a predictable operating environment, less unnecessary regulation, and more opportunities to grow and to employ.

Working life is in the midst of transformation. Artificial intelligence, digitalisation, and new forms of work are changing the way we work. I want a society that does not brake this development but helps people keep pace with change. Everyone must have the chance to work, to develop their skills, and to build their own path. A high employment rate is a precondition for financing the welfare society’s services in the future as well.

04

The blue-green transition

Fighting climate change and economic growth are not opposites. At their best they go hand in hand. Finland has every prerequisite to become a frontrunner in clean energy and sustainable solutions.

I want us to use technology, markets, and know-how in the fight against climate change. When sustainable choices are made profitable, new work, investment, and well-being arise at the same time.

The sustainable use of natural resources and care for the environment are hallmarks of a civilised society. It is especially important to look after local nature, waterways, and the Baltic Sea. The good treatment of animals is part of the same whole.
